Assistant commissioner

Assistant commissioner is a rank used in many police forces across the globe. It is also a rank used in revenue administrations (Land, Customs, Inland etc.) in many countries.

Australia

In all Australian police forces, excepting the New South Wales Police Force where it is junior to the rank of senior assistant commissioner, assistant commissioner is the rank below deputy commissioner but senior to the rank of commander (South Australia Police, Victoria Police), senior to the rank of superintendent (Western Australia Police) and senior to the rank of chief superintendent (Queensland Police Service, New South Wales Police Force). In all services, the insignia consists of crossed and wreathed tipstaves; as a rank, it is roughly equivalent to that of a brigadier or major-general in the army.

India

In that country, senior officers of the rank of assistant superintendent/assistant commissioner of police or above may belong to the national Indian Police Service or state police services, whereas Indian inspectors and constables belong to the individual provincial police forces.

Pakistan

In Pakistan, assistant commissioner is a rank of the Revenue Administration, which is of two sub-types: Land Revenue, also known as District Management Group, and Inland Revenue. The assistant commissioner of Land Revenue is an official appointed/posted at the sub-district level responsible for managing land records, revenue receipts related to land transfer, water cess and crop cess etc. He is also given magisterial powers in the capacity of sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) to settle disputes .

Bangladesh

In that country, assistant commissioner of police is the rank of Metropolitan Police. It is junior to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Ireland

In An Garda Siochana, the Republic of Ireland's national police force, the rank of assistant commissioner is between chief superintendent and deputy commissioner.

New Zealand

In the New Zealand Police, the rank of assistant commissioner is junior to the rank of deputy commissioner and is senior to the rank of superintendent. assistant commissioner is the top rank that can be achieved by a sworn member other than by statutory appointment. There are currently five assistant commissioners with separate areas of responsibility.

United Kingdom

Assistant commissioner of police of the metropolis (AC) is the third highest rank in the London Metropolitan Police, ranking between deputy assistant commissioner and deputy commissioner of police of the metropolis. The assistant commissioner is also the second-in-command of the City of London Police, ranking between commander and commissioner. The rank is not used in other British police forces.
